Earlier this year, I wrote an article decrying the sorry state of next-gen games. The washed out color, the simplicity of them and shortness of length...I let ‘em have it because they deserved it. Just a few months later, I am glad to be able to say that the industry is beginning to recover. Financially, maybe not so much yet. But the quality of the games is beginning to improve, and the price of the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 is down to the reach of the average gamer. For the first time in three years, I can say once again: Video games are the cheapest form of entertainment. Here some of the companies and games that deserve praise for achievements in this generation of consoles.
SONY Best Platform PS3 Sony takes this award for working diligently to get the price of the PS3 down. They were already losing money, now they are losing more. Let’s hope improvements in manufacturing processes and a healthy slice of the gaming pie dollars will make it profitable for them to continue producing games. The loss of Sony in the gaming industry would set us back a long way. Sony has done what it set out to do, to produce the most powerful, cheapest computer ever built. The PS3 is a marvel for the price, and less expensive then most laptops.
ROCKSTAR Best Game GRAND THEFT AUTO IV For a myriad of improvements in backgrounds and Artificial Intelligence. Grand Theft Auto IV is the most complex video game ever created. The amount of pedestrian dialog is enormous, and random actions occur with a frequency that’s just about right. Not too often, just enough to make life exciting in Liberty City. The city lives and breathes with a pulse of its own and presents the most realistic facade ever. The game graphics - map, health bar, etc, - can all be turned off, making a simple walk down the street an interactive experience. The innovations in this game will help all video games improve.
CAPCOM Best Artificial Intelligence RESIDENT EVIL 5 For the simply awesome Artificial Intelligence partner in Residence Evil 5. The first time you play the game, your AI partner is Sheva, and she wins hands down as best sidekick of all time. We have had AI sidekicks since Tails was introduced in the early Sonic games, but never like this. She shoots great, and most importantly, stays out of your way most of the time, and seldom needs your help. Wow. If I only had a real girl like her. I better be careful, because my girlfriend, Stormy sends these reviews in for me and I have all the intelligence of a retarded monkey with its mind always between its legs hope she doesn’t mess with the final edit.
INSOMNIAC Best Color RATCHET AND CLANK The PS2 Ratchet and Clank games were among the most colorful of that generation, and Insomniac has brought their expertise in creating vivid colors to this new generation of games. The outer space scenes are a mix of deep green and purple that would have made Van Gogh proud. The color effects when Ratchet gets several weapons going at once set your screen ablaze with fantastic neon explosions. I applaud your color, Insomniac. May the spirit of Fredrick Church shine on you!
EIDOS Best Graphics TOMB RAIDER In the mid 90’s Eidos was the premier developer of 3d gaming, and I am happy to say that they have spent some bucks and restored the Tomb Raider series to its former graphic glory. The fog effects, sunlight, and water are the best to be found. Lara’s in-game face changes expressions, and she gets dirty as dust from her cave surroundings falls on her. Her clothes cling to her when she’s wet, and man, what a figure they cling to! Lara’s new body is the best in video games anywhere and I really am just like a monkey, even lusting after animated girls still think she’s the hottest girl in gaming.
